Baby Mobiles

Okay. What is the deal with baby mobiles these days? Charles, my mom and I have been looking for a baby mobile for seriously...months...and have not found anything that we like!

First of all, the mobiles are all so "full" of stuff. It seems a little overwhelming. Does an infant really need to see the ENTIRE Noah's ark on a mobile?

Second of all, the mobiles usually have "stuffed" animals on them. What is the point of that? Aren't stuffed animals supposed to be touched and felt? If it is hanging above your baby's head away from hands reach due to strings causing a choking hazzard, that makes the idea of touching them sort of moot, right?

Third of all, the things that are on there don't seem very colorful. Instead, they are more worried about the colors matching the room decor. I thought the point was to draw the infant's interest, not the adults....hmmmm...

Also, so many of them are attached to plastic arms that attach to baby cribs, which, to me look super gaudy, and don't seem to really fit the cribs anyway (read the reviews...parents are always jerry-rigging these things).

Finally, the characters almost never face down. Where is your baby? She is in the crib, looking up! She doesn't want to see the feet of a character. She wants to see the face!

I have two mobiles in mind that would work wonders, but neither of them are for sale. The first was in my doctors office. There were three dancing ladies (facing downward) hanging from beautiful wire. It looked handmade. Absolutely goregous! The second was a mobile of the solar system at my local baby consignment store, with amazing colors, simple but large enough to cast shadows and blow in the breeze.

If any of you happen to know of a cool place to get a colorful, simple, wooden or otherwise non-plastic or non-stuffed mobile, that faces the baby and will stimulate their interest, please let us know!

This is almost EXACTLY like what I had for Kirsten. I had found it through some Parenting magazine at the time.
It came with a little squishy 'book' that you could prop next to them that also had the same patterns in B&W.
See the many reviews..

Its funny, this was actually one of the ones I sort of liked from Amazon's choices (the other is made by Goki and is wooden). Another friend recommended it too. I like the idea that it is black and white and suits the child's visual and intellectual development. My only complaint is in the reviews, some people complain that is it cheaply made, breaks easily, cards are hard to change, etc.

Abigail tends to stare at the ceiling fan. Maybe we just attach some black electrical tape to that! Ha!

I have also heard that black and white is best when they are tiny.

Nadia was too big for that stuff when we got her, so it was a non issue... sort of like the boob thing. HA HA!
