Shower #1

FIREFIGHTER GIRLS SHOWER

My first shower ever in my whole life was thrown by the girls of the fire department. I never knew that having my husband as a firefighter would join me for life with such a wonderful group of girls. And even among the firefighter men, they said that our little group was a special one. About 13-15 wives of fellow firefighters and some of their friends and sisters, whom I've gotten to know over the years at firefighter functions, attended this event. A core group of these women had their husbands go through the same Fire Academy as Charles (or the year before or after).

Ms. Rayna Hess was the hostess extraordinaire, giving up her home for the day, sending out evites, and organizing all the important pieces, including making many dishes for the yummy luncheon, buying all the drinks and mixers for us to enjoy, and getting the plates and napkins in coordinating colors. She also helped coordinate the "men's event." Her husband, Jason, took Charles to a local bar/restaurant so he could meet up with all the guys and have a couple beers and get his chance to celebrate.

Rayna also has a good friend who is a florist (Megan Haney Designs), who couldn't come. She donated five of THE most beautiful flower arrangements for the event, which was also a gift. The flowers included hydrangeas, tulips, white roses, lots of interesting shades of green, and palm leaves encircled each vase. I took each of the flower arrangements home and enjoyed them for over a week at my house and even got to keep the vases!

The decorations at this event were just amazing. If you know me, you know I don't like waste, so traditional decorations that just end up in the garbage bin are not my favorite. Marcie Colbath used her hidden creative juices to make decorations which also doubled as gifts. She had a clothesline draped across the room with baby clothes clipped to the line. She made three absolutely stunning diaper cakes (where diapers are rolled, tied with ribbon and toys, then stacked like a cake), topped with beautiful ribbons, washclothes, soap, rattles and other little goodies. Seriously, I haven't had the heart to tear them apart and every person that comes to my house asks me who the professional was that made the cakes!!! (That would be Diaper Cakes by Jerseygyrl). She also made three decorative signs welcoming the twin girls and congratulating me. The signs were mounted on decorative paper with each letter cut out by hand. I currently have them hanging as banners in the babies' room. In addition, her daughter made two princess crowns, one for each of the girls, and even their cards were hand-made.

The cake was absolutely divine! My good friend Jeanette Hummel went to the same bakery that made their wedding cake. She found a cake shaped like a baby buggy, and they used fresh fruit and whipped cream frosting on the inside. I love, love, love, fresh spring cakes like that. The cake was so delicious, even after eating our luncheon, many of us girls went back for seconds... and I didn't cut the first pieces small either.

Samantha Ochoa, just having given birth to her second child, a week before my shower, came with her little son in tow, and brought gifts and diapers. She also brought her amazing camera and took the most cherished photos of the event. She and I have found a similar interest in scrapbooking and photographing, so having someone take pictures was very important to me. As you can imagine, I wasn't expecting her to come knowing that her due date was so close to the date of the shower so having her there was a very special surprise.

Each of the other girls brought a dish to share for the luncheon, and they literally "showered" me with their generosity, love, smiles, and good will. These girls came packing with a punch with so many diapers and wipes in tow I was in awe! Many of them still have young children or are planning families soon, so I imagine they understand the usefulness of such items...And not only did they get THE cutest clothes ever (hoodies, onesies, sleepers, dresses, socks, and even leg warmers), they also got many of the important things from our registry (like the bathtub, bobby, floormat play set, bottles, pacifiers, teethers, bottle cleaners, desitin, vaseline, lotions, creams, shampoo, soaps, and so much more!).

A big shout out to those wonderful ladies, and all they have done for me and Charles! Click below to see pictures of the event as well. Love to you all!
