Thank you to all for your wonderful baby mobile suggestions. We found some that we were really close to buying! Ultimately, Charles wants things done his way though so he ended up making his own. Two of them to be exact. (I swear he is a renaissance man!)
This mobile is over the crib and is made out of sea animal stencils that Charles bought at the local toy store. He attached the pictures to wooden dowels, and leveled the dowels by putting blue tape on the ends.
It's a good thing too. The girls truly "woke up" right when he put them up. Those of you who have experience around newborns, know what I mean. As newborns, babies are just kind of sleepy. They can't see very far and don't engage much with people or things. But then their vision gets better and all of a sudden people and things are interesting to them!
This mobile is over the changing table and is made out of a science fair solar system kit that Charles bought at the local toy store. He attached the planets (minus poor Pluto) to wooden dowels using fishing wire.
Lucky for us, the girls absolutely love their new mobiles! It provides entertainment to give us another five minutes to sleep or finish eating or whatever.

Love the mobiles - great job! I couldn't tell by the pictures if the Ocean one has the stencils laying 'flat' so they could see them (you know what I mean?), or just hanging regularly?
At any rate, they are enjoying them, and that's the fun part and the whole point.
I'm going to a baby shower this coming Sunday and I have bought the black and white 'book' "Look at the Animals" by Peter Linenthal. I had something similar in vinyl and put it everywhere when Kirsten was a baby - crib, changing table, car, etc.
Hope she enjoys it.
It's so fun to see them look at things.
Just looked again at the garden pictures. It is just amazingly terrific. LOVE it! Wish I could see it in person. It's so wonderful to have home grown veggies. Just when my veggies were coming up nicely - big worms came and ate it all up! :(
Anyway, I'm enjoying my inside garden of sprouts and microgreens for sure! :)
The mobiles look cool. Charles is so amazing. Those girls are so lucky to have him for a daddy. I can tell he will be coming up with all kinds of great ideas for them.
Go daddy!
@ Gail: Good question Gail. Yes, that was the beauty of making it ourselves that we could turn the stencils any direction we wanted. So the bottom row faces down. Those are the ones the girls see from their crib the best and they love honu (sea turtle) and the pelo (fish). The middle row is slanted sideways, the top row is parallel to the walls. I find the girls actually looking at the mobile from across the room now so its good that we have all the angles covered.
Such a bummer about your garden!!! I know how you love your fresh produce! We haven't been without our problems. The chard and beets have gotten leaf minor and they are impossible to get rid of. I guess you can eat it, but it is kinda gross to think there is a worm living inside your leaves when you are eating them!
@ Jeanette: As he was for Simon, he is a very inventive game player and toy giver. It is always so much fun to watch!
