Discoveries

Wouldn't it be cool to remember when you discovered your hands? As I watch Annabelle and Abigail finding this new appendage, I find myself wondering what they are thinking. (A cool contest is now started for people to add comments of what they think is going on in the mind of an infant during this stage.)

Annabelle in particular is fascinated by her hands and feet. First she simply noticed they were there. And I happened to be watching. There was a look of utter shock as her eyes grew large and her eyebrows raised up, as if to say, "What the heck IS that?"

After the initial awareness went away, she became fascinated with watching them move. The fascination seemed to say, "What the heck IS that and wow they move too!"

Then it moved into, "Those moving things are attached to my body! Weird!"

Now she's at the stage where she realizes that SHE is the one making them move. And she is particularly enchanted with this new feat. It probably makes the viewing more interesting since she's not fully in control of the movement; she's always in for a surprise to find out which way they'll go!

If you could remember something before the age of four, what would you like to remember?

I say remembering your birth would be pret-T freaky!!!!

I love this stage, and as much fun as it is to see the child make this discovery, it is equally fun to see the delight it gives the new parent!
I love to read your telling of it; and hearing my co-worker, Candy, tell the same with her baby.
And what is it that makes it so joyful to hear and think about?
I think it's the stripping away of all things complex and to be taken to the most basic and simple of things..as they say in Japanese, "Kangen" - which means 'back to Origin"..and all beginnings..

Off topic somewhat, one time my cat was making the strangest sounds. A growl; an anger, a frustration type of noise and he was making such a ruckas! I peered around the corner and what appeared to be him chasing his tail. Well, who hasn't seen an animal chase his tail before, so I started to walk away. But, I noticed this was different somewhat. He was angry at his tail for 'following' him and was trying to get it to go away!
Other times, he has looked at me with utter surprise - "Do I know you?" - as if he's never seen me before.

I could watch animals and babies forever..

Oh, forgot to answer your question.
I don't know what I'd *like* to remember, but I know that my earliest memory was from under age two!
And I do remember things from before age 3 because they are of Illinois and we moved to CA from Illinois when I was only three!

Gail what was the memory? I do love that about cats too. They are very much like newborns. Guin often said that the girls reminded her of kittens!
